about

With more production flourishes and a beefed up post-punk vibe, This Job is Killing Me sees Fistymuffs entering a new musical phase while still retaining the raw power of their earlier work. The lyrics attack a culture of working that valorises overwork to the point of burnout, and allows corporations to treat workers as numbers, with low pay and job insecurity a constant threat. The eponymous phrase ‘This Job is Killing Me’ was originally an offhand remark made by drummer Nikki Foxx during band practice while venting about her work - she has fortunately since found a new job!

Guitarist Suky, who worked in an office across Edinburgh throughout the pandemic, says: “This song has been the unofficial anthem of the pandemic for me. Though I was only able to replay it in my head, as we didn’t finish recording it before lockdown, it summed up how going out to work during a global pandemic affected my mental health; with the threat of Covid and passing it on ever-present.”

lyrics

Lyrics

I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
I work to live (I pay and pay)
I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
This job, gunna kill me one day!

I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
I work to live (I pay and pay)
I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
This job, gunna kill me one day!

Profit before people
Sales before service
Head in my hands
Is it all worth it?

Staring out a window
To the world outside
I wanna live
Not just survive!

This job is killing me!
Rat race we run
Debt is a gun
Debt is a gun

This job is killing me!
Rat race we run
Debt is a gun
Debt is a gun

Corporate greed
The new religion
Save us from
This mass corruption

Shareholders demand
More and more
Profit is a god we pay for

This job is killing me!
Rat race we run
Debt is a gun
Debt is a gun

This job is killing me!
Rat race we run
Debt is a gun
Debt is a gun

Your time is theirs
And not your own
Keep in line
Pay of your loan

Sleep deprivation
Is the new normal
You should smile
But keep it formal!

This job is killing me!
Rat race we run
Debt is a gun
Debt is a gun

This job is killing me!
Rat race we run
Debt is a gun
Debt is a gun

I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
I work to live (I pay and pay)
I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
This job, gunna kill me one day!

I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
I work to live (I pay and pay)
I struggle through the day (I pay and pay)
This job, gunna kill me one day!
